I’d like to be… under the sea…

I know I've been neglecting my blog lately.  To make up for it, here is a photo slideshow from our recent Hawaii vacation.  Amber booked us on an submersible scooter excursion.  Despite the first few pictures, we didn't see any turtles underwater first hand, but we did see one from the boat, and it was a lot of fun.

They made us do the shaka sign, by the way.

More photos from Hawaii to come.

What’s your story?

What's your story, lonely banana I saw from the bus window Friday morning?  Did you get lost on your way to work?  Was someone sorely disappointed by your disappearance around lunch time?

Lonely banana could be a great band name

Making Sushi

Sunday evening Amber and I made our first attempt at homemade sushi using the rolling mats and dishes that Amber got as wedding shower gifts from her friend Angela.  (Thanks, Angela!)

We started by making our rice.  On the left is our tezu, a vinegar, salt and sugar solution added to the rice after it is cooked.

While the rice was cooking, we started prepping some of the ingredients.

Flat Justice (who is visiting from California) helped as much as he could, given that he is two dimensional.  There really should be a telethon for the dimensionally impaired.

After the rice was cooked, we added the tezu

and spread the rice out to cool.

While I was fanning the rice to cool it (sadly, not pictured), Amber worked on the prep for some of her ingredients, shrimp and crab meat.

And then, the moment of truth.  We got the salmon from Whole Foods.  It turns out that they don't sell sushi-grade fish from their fish counter, but the sushi counter was happy to oblige us.  (I'm sure the chef was secretly wondering why we didn't just buy her salmon roll.)

For our first roll, I tried a salmon roll.

The rolling went pretty well, but I didn't get the placement of the ingredients or the proportions quite right, so I wound up with kind of a spiral.

It looked and tasted really good, though.

Next, Amber tried her hand at a shrimp and crab roll.

She did great on her rolling.

Isn't that impressive?

We practically licked our plates clean.

We each made a couple of really tasty rolls and had a blast doing it.  I think for next time (oh yes, there will be a next time) we will look for some alternate sources for our ingredients, especially the fish.

Sushi attempt one: success!

Favorite Photo

We had dinner at Anne and Kevin's last weekend, and they kindly gave us a copy of this picture of us dancing at their wedding last May.  It's now one of my favorite photos of us.

Dancing at Anne and Kevin's wedding.

Sadly, there are no flying lemons pictured in it, but other than that, it's great.

Random signage

Saw this while shopping the other day.  There is something about random weight being priced per pound that makes me chuckle.

Judgmental Fail

I forgot to include this in my last post just now.  I have about a half mile to walk from my bus stop to my building and I noticed this graffiti on a window on the way in yesterday:

Judgemental Fail

I think his message would be more powerful if the author knew what version of "your" he should use, don't you?  I stood there for about twenty seconds deciding whether I should add my correction, but I didn't have a red sharpie with me and I decided that the fine/jail time for correcting graffiti was probably the same as writing it in the first place were one of Seattle's finest to happen by as I was doing my editing.

So I lied…

Yeah, apparently I lied about posting over the weekend.  Um… three weeks ago.  Anyway…

Life has been pretty busy.  Wedding planning/activities have been progressing.  Recent activities included working on the menu with our venue, cake tasting and engagement pictures.  We are still working on the menu, but we've settled on a vendor for our cake: Mike's Amazing Cakes.  The engagement photo session went well.  Or at least it seemed to.  We haven't actually seen any pictures yet so I guess we really shouldn't judge.  But the actual posing seemed to be okay.

Amber near the Paris HotelWork has been a little insane lately, but this weekend I'm heading to MIX in Vegas so next week should be back to sanity.  What's better is that Amber is heading down for a long weekend in Vegas, so we get some R&R together before the conference and in the evenings.  We were there for MIX last year too, but it was a little earlier in the year and despite what appears to be nice weather, it was incredibly windy and too cold to hang out by the pool.  Hopefully this year will be better and we will get some much needed sunshine.

It probably isn't a great idea to advertise when you are away, but for those nefarious individuals who might take advantage of such information, our friend and trusty cat / housesitter, Eric, will be here.

In other news, I have continued to be a slug, but Amber did the Mercer Island Half Marathon a couple of weekends ago.  Here's a before picture:

Here's an after:

Amber after the big race

She got a PR, but would've liked a better time.  Of course, if it were me, I'd still be out there running.

It was a really nice morning and I took a some pictures while she was running.  Here are a few of the ones I like:

Like I've said, I've been a slug lately and not eating very good to boot.  So when I get back from Vegas, I need to really focus on exercising and eating better.  Any suggestions?  Maybe I need to go back through the blog and see how many times I've said something similar.

Semi-random picture of the day 3/15/2011

I've gotten way behind in blogging again, but I promise a real post by the end of the week.  Here's a semi-random picture to tide you over until then.

Semi-random picture of the day 2/18/2011

I'm going to start regularly posting semi-random pictures from my flickr account.  Today's is in honor of the sun peeking out.  Could spring be here soon?

It's cooooold out there today

It's our second day of winter wonderland here in Redmond, WA.  As you can see, it's nice and clear, but it is very cold outside.

Amber is now walking to the bus stop to try to get to her lab in Seattle and  I am working from home again today.  I plan to talk to her management at their holiday party about the remote robot worker plan I mentioned yesterday.  I really think it could work.

We almost got enough snow that you can't tell I should have mowed the lawn at least one more time before winter got here.  Almost.

The most surprising news so far today is that my new phone is still scheduled for delivery.  I hope UPS isn't just taunting me:
